After a very harsh year of Vietnam with the largest wave of Covid with almost all activities are lockdown, There is no better time for Hoàng Thùy Linh to come back with the song “Gieo Quẻ” than on the first day of 2022. The song is released in the hope of welcoming a better new year in the “New Normal”.
“Xin Quẻ” is one of the well-known customs and traditional cultures of Vietnamese people for thousand years. The tradition will provide luck or any sign for a new successful year.
On the first day of the year, people usually go to pagodas and wait for them to guess what will come to them in the next coming year. They may wonder about their job or their relationship. Having a healthy, successful year is what people wish for a new year, especially in the very beginning days of the year.

Hoàng Thùy Linh changed the production team, but her music style is the same: contemporary folk music with a combination of ethnic instruments and electronic sounds.
“The difficulties of the past two years, Linh thinks, are like a busy road with traffic suddenly blocked by an infinity red light, causing everyone to stop. Not only people or means of transport but the functioning of society is also affected when everyone is an important link in each other’s lives. There will be a feeling of disappointment and bewilderment when everything is in disarray. Not everyone can easily adapt to sudden changes, but once we face and accept them, we will overcome them very quickly because people always need to be understood and shared.” – Hoàng Thùy Linh shared.

The song is about a girl who has a lot of worries before a new year such as work, economy, and daily life. However, the love story is not something she needs to know beforehand. To her, love is something already destined, it is just a miracle that no one can guess on their behalf. She doesn’t want to rush then the love will not go anywhere.

The rap verse with the performance of Đen Vâu is a highlight of the song with the real story about how Vietnamese people faced the pandemic in the last two years. Through the rap, Đen Vâu and Hoàng Thùy Linh understand the hardships of frontline forces fighting the epidemic and thereby show gratitude to them. Just looking for the positive things in the worst situation, we will then find a way.

The MV begins with many people are stuck in the infinite red traffic light, which represents how people deal with the lockdown during the pandemic, they have to wait for an unidentified day on which our world is brought back to normal. There is a remarkable detail in the MV that is the image of people sharing each loaf of bread, each bottle of water when waiting for the green light. A very humane image of Vietnamese people during the pandemic was recorded by Hoàng Thùy Linh. With the catchy traditional yet modern tunes, combined with the positive message for a new year, the MV has gotten nearly 20M views and has stood at top 2 YouTube trending (after “Mang Tiền Về Cho Mẹ” of Đen Vâu) for many weeks.
I love the nod to the culture and the inspirations pulled from it. It helps open up people to experience different things if they are not from or familiar with Vietnam.
I really into her color of MV, each one has a special meaning
This feels very ’90s west but with the rich culture of Vietnam! I love it! They did a great job with the funky styles and clothing options. It is fun, bright, and keeps you watching. The song is great too.
@readysetgo I was thinking the same thing! The colouration is so bright and fun. Today’s style in the west is boring. I do miss the trend of the late 90s and early 00s.
